Kicking your Bedside Table to the Curb

Hello Everyone! Happy Moanday, I mean Monday. I am excited to have another guest blogger this week!

Please Welcome Heather from Wood of Bell Trees.

I am so excited to be here at Allie's today!
Living in a small house with three people and their plethora of belongings can be quite the challenge, but it's one I enjoy taking head on. For years we struggled with space in our master bedroom; we had an entire bedroom suite and while it was quite modular it was far too big for our space. I got so frustrated that I decided to just get rid of the set before I had even replaced it or knew what I would get.

My neighbor was happy when she saw we were getting rid of it as her daughter needed to furnish an entire house. She had cash and was ready to pay, but since I was donating it anyway I just gave it to her. Our bed went on a basic metal frame that we already had and everything else? Well they went into bins. Eventually I bought bookshelves for the bins and we replaced the metal bed frame with a canopy bed.

We were in desperate need of beside tables since we like to read in bed, but I couldn't find any that met my requirements: size, style and price. Sure I found many that far exceeded my budget, I always find things that are out of my budget. We must be attracted to each other. Ha!

I continued for months looking for new bedside tables and I just didn't find anything, so I did one of my favorite things: I went shopping! Shopping around my house that is! We have a bar and with it a couple of saddle stools, we don't use the bar unless we have a lot of company so I temporarily snagged the stools and placed them on either side of the bed. Since it was a temporary fix I didn't want to permanently affix anything to them so, I placed a large book across the bottom foot rungs as a shelf and found a basket to put on the "book" shelf to store things like power cords, chap-stick and other odds and ends. Of course the main reason we needed the tables was for lamps to read in bed and the stool's seat has a carved out area for a more comfortable seating experience. Since the top/seat isn't completely flat, it made the lamps wobble about threatening to fall off and shatter everywhere. These lamps are my all time favorite accessory and shattering was not an option!

So what do you do when your favorite home decoration is put in a precarious position? Museum Putty! I love Museum Putty, the only drawback I have found is that on some surfaces it can a leave a grease like stain. The stool and the lamp are not something that should get stained so I am not worried about that, but be aware of that should you decide to use it. Now my lamps are safely secured to the bar stools. I keep my favorite piece of Peter's Pottery to put my jewelry in before bed and a notepad to write down my thoughts and ideas I have in the middle of the night.

I love the combinations of textures: the matte surface of the lamps, the mint snakeskin lamp shades, the wood grain of the stool and the water hyacinth basket give it a nice balance.

It's been two years now and the bar stools still live as our bedside tables and I love them, they're the perfect size, they were "free" and should I need them at the bar I can just take everything off and put them right back when I'm done with them. The bar stools would only be used a few times a year if they still lived at the bar versus using them everyday as bedside tables. Our temporary fix turned into a permanent dream!

  9. I saw on one of those shows they used something like this Wall Shelf instead of a table. One of the ones they used was a rectangle so you could put things under and on top. I think they attached it to the wall with one of the quick 3M stuff too. I can't find the exact one. Thank you for linking up to Turn it Up Tuesdays!
