Hand Painted Pillow

I have been buying gently used pillows at Salvation Army. I wait till their 50% off and then pay around $1-2.
I am trying to replace the pillows in my living room. My intentions are to recover a lot of them. The ones I have now, I made and the cotton is not holding up, and they are too mushy.
I found this one the other day, and I  just loved the design on it. But it was a horrible mustard color.

While that would be a great color if I had other colors to match it, however it was not good in my living room. So I dyed it, and it came out this darker tan color. I had hoped for a dark brown color. But it just wouldn't die properly.
So then I thought hmm... what about painting it?

I selected Desert Turquoise and mixed it with Zinc gray.

And began painting it with a horse hair type paint brush. It took a long while though because of its texture.

When it dried it was quite stiff.

So I washed it, and its better now!

But I noticed that I didn't get into the grooves that well in certain spots.
So, I maybe doing another paint job on it and filing in those gaps. Which means I'll have to wash it again!
Oh well... the mishaps of crafting.

I love the color though!

Now to just get the other pillows done. I am thinking I'll knit or crochet one of them.
Stay tuned for that project...
Thanks so much for tuning in today! I hope you have a wonderful week!
Until next time...

  1. Great color Allie. You can buy fabric medium (it should be near the acrylic paints) and mix it with your paint according to the instructions, usually 2:1 or 3:1 ratio. It keeps the paint from being stiff. Great idea to paint the pillow. Thank you for sharing it at to What We Accomplished Wednesdays. Have a great week!
