Bloomin Onion

Hello guys!

Today, I am going to share my attempt at a bloomin onion, other wise known as an "Awesome Blossom".

First:

Get you a big Ole Onion like this...

Then cut the end off.

Peel the first layer off.

And cut the other end off.

Flip on its bottom (the wider part).
Cut it down the middle but do no cut it all the way leave about a half inch from the bottom.

Then cut it half way the other way, making sure not to cut all the way to the bottom.

Then make diagonal  cuts.
Cut even more than this picture shows.

Now for the batter...
I used this fish fry batter because I wanted a nice corn meal texture.
I added one package and about 1 cup of flour to it.

You also need a wet batter too.
Mix one package of the Fish Fry mix and 1 egg, and about 1 cup of milk. I added a little more milk to make it thinner, but really you just have to play around with it to get the right consistency.

Now dip the onion in the dry mix.

Then dip it into the wet batter.

Then back into the dry mix again.

Get a big pot and fill the pot half way full of vegetable oil, and put on 7 or 8 to heat up.

It will take a good 15-20 minutes for the oil to heat.

Once it does, very carefully drop your onion in.
I used salad tongs to do it so I wouldn't get burned but I could still carefully place it in there.

Get a spoon an keep pouring the oil on top of the onion to make sure you cook it really good inside of the onion too!

When its nice and brown take it out, and place it onto a plate with 3 paper towels on it.

Let it cool for at least 10 minutes before attempting to eat it.

For the dip, I cheated. I love this new dressing from Taco Bell.
Its cheap and just the right consistency to dip the onion in. And its pretty darn close to Outback's dip.

Now dig in!

I would have liked it to be a little more bloomin. I think where I made the mistake was I cut to close to its bottom, and when I tried to spread it, it wanted to break off. So that's why I said cut it a good 1/4 inch from its bottom. And then fluff it out as much as you can before doing the batter process.

No worries, it stool was to die for. Our friends, and my husband and I devoured it in like 10 minutes.
The kids kept trying to come by and steal the crust. They weren't interested in the onion part. Oh well more for us!

I want to thank Hannah for taking the pictures for me. Thanks girl!

And thank you all for tuning in!
Until next time...
Don't forget only 4 more days until the
Pinterest Party!
